Kani do (Sleeping Place)

If I’ve got to sleep in a bed without you,
it’s got to be a single mattress laid right on the ground.
A single mattress is the perfect size for
sleeping alone.
I have this strange thing about
stretching out over the edge, being right on it.

I’ll lay down on my left side, really on my stomach.
The right knee and foot go over the right edge
The left foot goes down off the bottom
The right arm grips the top of the bed
The left arm is completely off the left side
spread across that pillow that reminds me of you.

All this last week I’ve been in the bush
sleeping on a single size metal cot.
The metal along the edge hurts when I try to surf it all night,
and I can’t really ever get comfortable.

So the return to my very own bed last night,
a single size mattress laid right on the ground,
Was absolutely wonderful.
There were the familiar stars in their familiar spots
right where I left them,
And I could think of you in comfort.

Though second best to having you next to me,
It’s one hell of a way to fall asleep.
